A Mystery Painting Revealed

Last Friday, over 100 mysteries were revealed at the Art of the Portrait Conference.

Each year, the Portrait Society of America hosts a "Mystery Sale" of 6x9-inch paintings at its Art of the Portrait Conference. When the sale opens, attendees have a short time period to view the paintings and enter their names for the chance to purchase their favorite pieces. Each painting sells for a fixed price of just $250, and the proceeds support the society's scholarship program. This year, the sale contained over 100 paintings. The "mystery" is this:

The identities of the artists are kept a secret
until after the paintings are sold!

Now that the Mystery Sale has ended, I can finally reveal my painting (below)!

 "Autumn Glow"
Oil • 9" x 6"

I painted "Autumn Glow" from a photo I took of Andrea while we were dating. So far, my Mystery Sale pieces have depicted Andrea and her sisters. Here are my 6x9 paintings from previous years:

Andrea's Latest Studio Work

Hello! Andrea here,

I am excited to show you one of my most recent studio pieces! First, I'll show you a couple of close-ups…

I started this painting over a year ago and returned to it multiple times before I was finally happy with it. The painting began with a simple oil sketch from life to accurately capture color and value. I then worked on this larger final piece using the color study and photos as references.

Here is the full painting:

Oil • 24" x 16" • (To inquire about availability,

I was primarily inspired by our model—she worked as hard as we artists did. Posing is certainly an art form! I also loved trying to capture the muted color scheme and the graceful lines and shapes created by the pose.

Of course, I am doing a bit less painting lately in order to tend to our other work of art :)

Gideon says hello!

We'll see you next time for more of our artwork and adventures!

A Work of Art We're Losing Sleep Over

We have some very special news—and a new painting—we'd like to share with you.

Over the past few months, a work of art
was in the making—one more beautiful than either of us could ever imagine.

On January 8th, we were finally able to meet our first little one. We are so excited to introduce you to Gideon Drew Clague!

Like all hungry newborns, this work of art is indeed causing us to lose sleep! While Mom took some well-earned rest, Adam captured the little guy in paint.

The first painting of our firstborn.

"Gideon at 1 Week" by Adam
Oil • 5.5" x 8.75"

We're praising God for His help throughout the delivery, for a fantastic birth team, and for a healthy mama and baby. We are in awe of this miraculous bundle the Lord has fashioned, and we can't wait to see what adventures lie ahead!

Until next time,
—Adam & Andrea

Our First Paintings of 2018

To kick off 2018, we'd like to invite you to enjoy one of our favorite family traditions. Each Christmas, we harvest a tree from our own property. After we select the perfect tree (usually one that resembles Charlie Brown's), we celebrate Christmas by painting it!

Here are a couple photos from our 2017 tree hunt, followed by our paintings.

Here are our paintings! We did something a little different this year. Instead of painting our tree at night, we painted it at dawn, so the cool, blue window light would complement the warm tree lights.

Now that the holidays are over, we'll re-plant our tree alongside others that have served as Christmas trees in years past.

Below are our Christmas tree paintings from all five years of marriage. Enjoy!
